| Customer Reviews: Great for Beginners! May 4, 2010 Dan & Sarah (Philly Burbs) 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
My husband bought me this machine for an early Mother's Day gift. I am really new to sewing and so far am in love with my Janome!! It was so easy to learn to wind the bobbin and thread the machine, going by just the manual. I haven't sewn a thing since 8th grade home ec and after 2 days of practicing I've already hemmed some things and fixed a few seams in my husbands' boxer shorts ;) The machine itself is very solidly built and runs so smoothly, it makes me feel silly for being so nervous about sewing for so long. I wish I had gotten one years ago! I would definitely recommend this machine to anyone looking to get into sewing for the first time, or anyone who just wants a good, solid-running machine that will last for many years. I've always heard good things about Janome and this machine is no exception.
A super functional masterpiece !! August 7, 2010 A Chandra 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'd done a bit of research on sewing machines on the internet prior to the purchase of the Janome Sewist 500. This purchase is an investment for me. It is well worth it. The machine is super functional. I'd recommend this sewing machine for first time sewists who'd like to continue sewing as a hobby. The instructions in the user manual and youtube videos on sewing helped me learn the basic techniques. I sewed on computer paper first to learn to sew in straight lines/curves etc., then mended my clothes, sewed hand-made cards, sewed pillow cases and I'm planning on more projects. The user manual helps here again with the stitch settings. A sewing machine has to be kept clean and I love the fact that it comes with a hard case.

I love it, love it, love it. I haven't sewn for years, but decided that I would give a shot at making new bedding after taking a textiles class this spring. The Janome came with excellent reviews and a "test drive" revealed the excellent nature of the machine. The stitches are exquisite. And it is probably the easiest, most intuitive machine I have ever touched. It is solidly built and has more features than most sewers will ever use. I also like the fact that it is mechanical, rather than electronic (fewer things to go wrong). An all around great machine.
